Join 4,000 of your friends and neighbors to celebrate the golden goodness of our locally-grown treasure: Sweet corn!
For the 13th year, folks who share a love of the juicy kernels will gather to eat and shuck it and enjoy family-friendly entertainment at the Sweet Corn Fiesta this weekend at the South Florida Fairgrounds.
Event Coordinator Ann Holt said Palm Beach County grows more sweet corn than any other county in the world and local farmers plant more than 27,000 acres annually, and, in May, they harvest and ship close to a million crates a week.
Holt has been the organizer of this popular event every year since it began. She also came up with the idea of serving the corn on a stick, which she stole from the corn dog. She says they buy 125 pounds of butter, and sometimes they need to go back to the store to get more.
Last year it rained, but there were still loyal fans lined up when the gates opened. “They said, ‘we’re not going to let a little rain stop us. I love seeing all the people walking around with their corn on a stick and the corn eating competition. (Emcee) George (Shea) is hilarious!”
Here’s are some highlights of the Fiesta:
Competitive corn eating for both amateurs and professionals is just one of the highlights. Kids and adults can prove their strength by participating in the shucking contest.
At 3 p.m., kernels will fly at the International Corn Eating Contest, officially recognized by International Federation of Competitive Eaters. The winner will take home $2,000.
A local corn eating contest also will be held for corn lovers 18 and older. The proceeds will benefit agriculture education and Glades area food banks.
Show your upper body strength at the corn shucking contests for adults and kids of all ages.
Live music and entertainment: Jade Master and Quentin Benedict and The Krystal River Band perform. Don’t miss the old fashioned bathing suit competition at 1 p.m.
For the kids: Kids rides and games, including face painting, bounce house and jump rope, beginning at 1:15 p.m. Wristbands for unlimited rides are $5.
