What is the program Tiger Woods is entering for first-time DUI offenders?

On the Tiger Woods’ case, Palm Beach County State Attorney Dave Aronberg said Wednesday he couldn’t discuss pending cases, but he did release information about his office’s First Time DUI Offender Program.

HOW IT WORKS

  • If first time DUI offender meets conditions of entering the program, he or she is required to plead guilty at arraignment to reckless driving.
  • The defendant then has adjudication withheld upon completion of set of requirements, such as DUI school, victim impact panels and 12 months of probation, which includes a ban on alcohol and drug possession and consumption.
  • The reckless driving charge can later be expunged.

HISTORY OF PROGRAM

  • Started in 2013.
  • More than 2,100 defendants have entered the program, and few have committed a DUI again.
  • Only program of its kind endorsed by Mothers Against Drunk Driving, the state attorney’s office says.
