UPDATE: Son in custody after father stabbed to death in Port St. Lucie


A 65-year-old man was stabbed to death in his Port St. Lucie apartment Tuesday evening, according to city police. His son is being held by police in his death.

Police were called just before 5 p.m. by a man, later identified as Justino Cruz Jr., who said he killed his father. When police arrived at at 141 southwest Palm Drive, in The Club at St. Lucie West community, they found Justino Cruz Sr. dead on the bedroom floor. Investigators said he had several stab wounds.

Soon after, police and the public were on the look out for 36-year-old Cruz who detectives believe drove off in a beige Toyota. As police searched the surrounding area with police dogs and a helicopter, the car was found, but not Cruz. At 7:10 p.m., officers got a tip that Cruz was near the Publix off of Crosstown Parkway, about five miles from The Club apartment complex. Investigators saw him walking along the road and placed him into custody without any problems.

Cruz was taken to the police department and the investigation continues, according to Sgt. Frank Sabol, spokesman for the police department. Police have not released any motive at this time.
