NEW: West Palm man sentenced for distributing fentanyl-laced heroin


A West Palm Beach man has been sentenced to more then eight years in federal prison for distributing fentanyl-laced heroin that resulted in the death of a 24-year-old New Jersey man, the U.S. Justice Department announced Tuesday.

Travis Reshard Preston, 38, was found guilty of five counts of distributing heroin to an undercover officer in August. Preston was sentenced to 102 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release and a $500 penalty.

Prosecutors asked the court to enhance his sentence based upon a prior distribution to the resulted in a death.

The name of the New Jersey man was not immediately available.

According to a federal complaint, a West Palm Beach police officer assigned to the DEA task force began investigating suspected drug activity by Preston in January. In February, an undercover officer made called Preston and arranged to purchase heroin.

The officer parked in front of Preston’s home and met with Preston in an unmarked vehicle. The officer paid $130 for 2.3 grams of heroin, and $5 for an unspecified substance used to cut the heroin, according to the complaint.

A sheriff’s crime laboratory confirmed that the officer had purchased heroin mixed with fentanyl. The cut was determined not to contain any controlled substance.
