NEW: Homeowner held burglary suspect at gunpoint until police arrive

A man allegedly caught burglarizing a shed Sunday night was held at gunpoint by the homeowner until police arrived, according to Port St. Lucie police.

Jorge Bruno Lopes, 42, is being held at the St. Lucie County Jail and is facing charges of burglary to an unoccupied dwelling and criminal mischief.

The homeowner told police he heard noises Sunday evening coming from his shed in the rear of the home.

As the resident went outside to investigate, Lopes emerged from the shed with a hand-held drill held over his head as if he planned to use it as a weapon, police said.

The resident drew his firearm and ordered Lopes to the ground where he remained until police arrived.

The burglary took place on the 600 block of Northwest Fairhaven Drive, north of Prime Vista Boulevard between Florida’s Turnpike and Interstate 95.
