NEW: Florida man celebrates 21st birthday by stealing iPad, police say

One birthday celebration was ruined by another after a Port St. Lucie man broke into a woman’s car last week and stole her iPad tablet, city police said.

Officers arrested Ainsley Gayle Jr. Friday after tracking the stolen $680 iPad to his home in Port St. Lucie, according to an arrest report made public Monday.

Gayle, who turned 21 on Thursday, and his alleged victim celebrated birthdays two days apart.

A 45-year-old woman told police she had come home Friday and was bringing items inside when her iPad slipped out of her purse and fell onto the driver’s side floor. The woman said she planned to go back for the tablet but was surprised by a birthday party.

She went back to her car a couple of hours later to discover that the iPad had been stolen. Officers used a ping to track the device to an address on Southwest Kalevala Drive. There they made contact with Gayle.

Gayle admitted to possessing the iPad and told officers a random man had given it to him, police said. He then explained that he was at a Dollar Store earlier in the day when a man gave him the iPad for his birthday.

The alleged victim gave police the password, which successfully unlocked the device.

Following his arrest, Gayle admitted to breaking into the woman’s car and stealing the iPad. He told officers he left home to buy a Black & Mild cigar and was heading back when he saw a light on in a car and the tablet inside.

Gayle faces charges of burglary and grand theft. He was taken to the St. Lucie County Jail without further incident.
