A man in Palm Coast landed himself in jail on Wednesday after a suicide pact he made with his girlfriend did not go as planned.
Bruce Haughton and Katherine Goddard, both 52, tried to kill themselves by carbon monoxide poisoning twice on June 29 and 30, The Daytona Beach News-Journal reports.
Haughton survived both attempts, but Goddard died on the second try. Officers arrested Haughton on charges of assisting self-murder, and he could face up to 15 years in prison, News-Journal reports.
According to investigators, Haughton and Goddard made the suicide pact after they stopped taking prescription pain medication. In both attempts, the couple put duct tape around the garage door of Goddard’s home and then stuck a dryer vent on the exhaust pipe of a car to fill the vehicle with carbon monoxide, News-Journal reports.
The first attempt failed when the car battery died, so the couple tried again the next day. Goddard’s daughter found the couple unconscious in the car and called 911.
Flagler County Sheriff’s Office deputies said the daughter discovered a note at the scene that read: “Due to the pain we are both in and can’t get help, this is the only way we can see getting out of it. Goodbye to everybody,” News-Journal reports.
Officials transported Haughton to the hospital and Goddard was pronounced dead at the scene, deputies said.
Haughton remains at the county jail on no bond, according to News-Journal.
