NEW: Delray man suffered fatal heart attack before crashing into pole

A 78-year-old suburban Delray Beach man died in March after suffering a heart attack while driving, causing his car to crash into a light pole west of the city limits, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.

Jerry Ginsburg died March 16 from hypertensive cardiovascular disease, the medical examiner’s office reported.

Ginsburg sustained the heart attack as he was driving northbound on Jog Road and was turning eastbound on Linton Boulevard when he told his wife Joyce that he was feeling “dizzy,” PBSO said. Ginsburg became unconscious and drove a 2008 Infiniti Q56 onto a sidewalk and into an Florida Power & Light Co. power pole.

The pole collapsed and fell onto the vehicle. Palm Beach County Fire Rescue crews were unable to reach Ginsburg or his wife for 13 to 15 minutes because of downed power lines, PBSO said.

Ginsburg was taken to Delray Medical Center where he died.

Joyce Ginsburg was not injured.
