Martin County sergeant forced to kill bull that trampled rancher


A Martin County sheriff’s sergeant shot and killed an “out of control” bull that trampled a rancher early Monday in Indiantown, the sheriff’s office said.

The rancher, 24-year-old Justin White, called dispatchers while the bull was pushing him into the water. The Indiantown resident was injured, he told the dispatcher, and having difficulty breathing.

Sheriff’s officials arrived at the property on Southwest Martin Highway shortly after 7 a.m. and found the man in a pond with the black bull nearby.

A sergeant fired three shotgun slugs into the bull, killing it, according to a sheriff’s office report. White was found face up in the pond where the water was about 2 feet deep. He was conscious but said the bull had stomped on his head and body.

White was flown to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center in Fort Pierce with serious injuries, the sheriff’s office said.
