Man accused of carjacking North Palm woman, fleeing from police

A Miami man is accused of stealing keys out of a 72-year-old North Palm Beach woman’s hand, pushing her down and carjacking her vehicle, police say. Days later, he led police on a chase in the stolen hatchback through two cities and hit another car along the way, according to reports.

Robert Brown, 28, was arrested on July 9 on charges of carjacking, battery on and theft from an elderly person, fleeing authorities, driving with a suspended license, grand theft auto and hit and run with damage, according to a recently released police report.

The following day, a judge set his bond at $46,500 in total at a hearing at the Palm Beach County Jail, according to online court records. He remained in jail as of Sunday night. Brown confessed to all of the charges against him, according to the affidavit showing probable cause for his arrest.

On July 7, police say Brown spotted the woman in the parking lot of an office building on U.S. 1 just south of the Parker Bridge, a village police report said. He took the keys to her Kia Soul out of her hand and drove off. At one point, he took the child seat from the back of the vehicle and gave it to an unknown person, according to the affidavit.

Two days later, a Riviera Beach police officer spotted the car driving north on the 2700 block of Avenue O, a city police report said. The officer turned on the vehicle’s patrol lights and siren as and chased the speeding car east on the 1300 block of West 27th Street.

The chase reached speeds from 60 to 100 mph as it continued to President Barack Obama Highway before heading south into West Palm Beach, according to the affidavits. Officers found the vehicle abandoned near the Helen Apartments at Broadway and 34th Street.

Witnesses said the driver ran east to Broadway, then north, the report said. Another witness said he was hiding under a white van on the north side of the Helen Apartments. Police arrested Brown soon afterward.

During the investigation, police discovered that Brown hit an occupied vehicle during the chase on the 1300 block of West 30th Street in Riviera Beach, the report said.
