LATEST: Man accused of crashing into FHP trooper during I-95 chase

A Riviera Beach man is facing charges that he led Florida Highway Patrol troopers on a chase reaching 115 mph on Interstate 95, then purposely crashed into a patrol car, sending a trooper to a hospital, according to an arrest report.

Adrian Nixon, 26, is facing charges of aggravated battery on an officer, fleeing and eluding with injury or damage and operating a motor vehicle with a driver’s license. Nixon was released from the Palm Beach County Jail on Monday after posting a $35,000 bond.

Trooper Lucas Tavares was getting onto northbound I-95 at the Gateway Boulevard entrance ramp in Boynton Beach on Sept. 22 when he noticed a 2017 Toyota Siena minivan traveling at about 100 mph in a 65 mph zone, the report said.

Tavares tried to pull the minivan over, but it took off, reaching speeds of 115 mph and “cutting from lane to lane,” the report said.

South of Forest Hill Boulevard, the minivan’s driver rolled down his window and began tossing contraband onto the roadway, allowing Tavares to get a clear look and description of the man.

Tavares then backed off, but the minivan’s driver cut across all lanes and intentionally struck the trooper’s marked vehicle, sending it into a spin, the report said. The minivan then crashed into the patrol car again, leaving it facing southbound in the northbound lanes.

The minivan continued to flee and was found abandoned on Military Trail north of Okeechobee Boulevard in suburban West Palm Beach shortly after the crash. The vehicle turned out to be a rental and the assigned renter was traced to an address in Riviera Beach. A search of the renter’s Facebook page revealed Nixon as a “friend.” Tavares identified Nixon as the driver.

DNA evidence also linked Nixon to the minivan. Records show that Nixon’s driver’s license had been suspended more than six years earlier — on April 26, 2011.

Two passengers who were seen abandoning the minivan with Tavares are not identified.

Tavares was taken to Good Samaritan Medical Center in West Palm Beach for minor injuries to his left shoulder and head, the report said.

Records show that Nixon served nearly three years in prison after being convicted in May 2011 oo charges including attempted robbery, grand theft of motor vehicle and drug possession.
