JUST IN: Drive a pickup? Lock your tailgate, authorities warn

If you drive a pickup, Martin County authorities are urging you to lock your tailgate.

The Martin County Sheriff’s Office reports a recent rise in truck tailgate thefts, with deputies investigating five such cases in less than a month. Thieves have specifically targeted Ford F-250 model trucks built between 2008 and 2016, the sheriff’s office said Wednesday.

Three of the thefts occurred in Coral Gardens, a neighborhood west of Federal Highway and south of Pomeroy Street, the sheriff’s office said. Another occurred in Rocky Point near Port Salerno and the other in Golden Gate, northwest of Sandsprit Park.

According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, Florida ranked third in the nation for tailgate thefts in 2014 and 2015.

The tailgates are valued at anywhere from a few hundred dollars to more than $3,000 for those with rear-view cameras and other accessories, according to cars.com.
