WHY THEY LOVE IT: Nancy Mitchell says it’s pretty easy to sum up what she loves about Treasure Island, a hidden enclave of 36 homes off the beaten path in Boynton Beach.
“It’s a great neighborhood and everyone knows each other,” says Mitchell, who moved here with her husband and two kids two years ago. “The first weekend we moved in, the neighbors threw us a big welcoming barbecue.”
And you don’t find that just anywhere.
Mitchell and her family were living in a rented townhouse in Palm Beach Gardens when their youngest was just 6 months old. They wanted more space — a yard for the kids and streets where the children could ride their bikes. Mitchell had spent her grade-school years in Nashville, Tenn., and then moved to Orlando in junior high. Once her family moved to Florida, she said she’d never felt that real sense of small-town community again.
Until they found Treasure Island.
Mitchell loves the area so much, she bragged about it for 15 minutes, then called back the next day to brag some more. “You feel safe, and you don’t feel like you’re intruding,” she said. “You call on your neighbor for help, and everybody helps each other out.
“This is probably the first place I’ve lived (as an adult) where I’ve felt that.”
They found the place, she says, by thinking outside the box. First they were looking in north county. But when she got an email about the house in Treasure Island, they took a gamble and looked at it the next day.
“You never know,” said Mitchell, who said the house had been on the market only two days when they made the offer. “This house was exactly what we wanted.”
