About 1.2 million foreclosure reparation checks sent nationwide have not been cashed, leaving nearly $1 billion unclaimed as a 90-day expiration date ticks down.
The checks, worth between $300 and $125,000, are part of agreements reached this year between the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency and major lenders to compensate homeowners for foreclosure-related wrongdoing.
