Lake Worth blogger a finalist in beauty magazine contest

Support our hometown girl …

… as she competes in “Allure” magazine’s Beauty Blogger of the Year contest!

This week, you can check out what Lake Worth resident Katie McBroom does with a huge box of Revlon cosmetics that arrives at her door by visiting blogger-awards.allure.com/submission/purple-haze/.

A new challenge, and a new round of voting, will begin at 9 a.m. Monday.

Around the “Palm Beach Post” newsroom, we know Katie McBroom as a perennially helpful news assistant and a model/makeup artist/stylist who’s made multiple Accent photo shoots shine.

The 26-year-old Lake Worth resident recently added another line to her resume when “Allure” magazine named her one of 10 finalists for Beauty Blogger of the Year in recognition of her Martinis and Mascara blog (martinisandmascara.com), where the regular features include “Salon Spy” and “Wear This/Drink That,” a themed product recommendation plus cocktail recipe.

McBroom was inspired to launch Martinis and Mascara “to write about what I know and love,” says the William T. Dwyer High School alum, who attended Orlando’s Joe Blasco Makeup School and earned a cosmetology license after attending the University of North Florida.

Over the next three weeks, “Allure” editors, celebrity judges like model Coco Rocha and votes by the general public will determine a winner who’ll enjoy backstage access during New York Fashion Week and the chance to write for “Allure” for a year.

“I thought that sounded like an amazing opportunity,” said McBroom, who in the contest’s first of five weeks captured the Most Buzzworthy title, thanks to hundreds of Facebook “likes” and Twitter tweets by her supporters.

For this week’s beauty challenge, each blogger received a box of Revlon cosmetics with instructions to create a look using only the products inside.

McBroom responded with a smoky eye in springtime shades and a two-toned ombre lip. “I did it a little unconventionally,” she reports on her blog, “so here’s hoping the judges think it’s creative and not too chongalicious!” (Judge for yourself: blogger-awards.allure.com/submission/purple-haze/)

This isn’t McBroom’s first turn in the spotlight. She played Snow White at Walt Disney World, smiled while holding her breath as an underwater mermaid at Weeki Wachee Springs and, in a bit of casting against type, starred as Frenchy, the beauty school dropout, in Lake Worth Playhouse’s “Grease.”
