Carnivore alert: The Butcher Shop Beer Garden & Grill opens Friday night in downtown West Palm Beach.

A sibling of Wynwood’s original Butcher Shop, the West Palm spot promises to be more than a restaurant. The hybrid concept includes a retail meat market, a full-service restaurant and a German-style beer garden.

The meat market component is already one familiar to father-and-son owners Igor and Fred Niznik – the family owns the longstanding Charlie’s Gourmet Meat Market in Palm Beach Gardens.

Grand opening weekend includes an invite-only “friends and family” dinner Thursday night and a VIP cocktail-hour party Friday samplings of the restaurants grilled meats, a beer tower and DJ-spun tunes.

Adding a layer of downtown hip to the mash-up concept, there’s also a yoga class planned for Saturday morning, which donations to benefit the Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League

The ideal aperitif: Good vermouth, cool and fragrant

One summer evening a few years ago, I was standing in the Napa Valley kitchen of Steve Matthiasson, a farmer and winemaker, when he handed me a tumbler filled with amber liquid and a fat cube of ice. It was not what I was expecting from Matthiasson, who, with his wife, Jill Klein Matthiasson, makes a range of wonderfully pure and refreshing wines from...

When a cook such as Rima Kasm prepares for Ramadan - the month-long period during which Muslims fast during daylight hours - she knows that planning is even more essential than usual. "I will write down what I want to cook each day and get everything I need," says the Newport Beach, California, resident who came to America from her native...
