National Pi Day: A day to indulge in pie at these local restaurants

It may not compute, but we’ve got pie on the brain on National Pi Day. Yes, we know the holiday is really math. But, let’s be honest, our though bubble says “banana cream” or “Dutch apple” right now. Not math.

Another reason to seize on the occasion: the actual National Pie Day blurred by us on Jan. 23.

Whatever today’s holiday’s true intention may be, we all deserve a sweet slice.

Here are some exceptional local options:

Southern Pecan Pie at The Upper Crust

This Lake Worth shop is pie heaven. If you can read through the menu without ordering every pie, you are a monument to will power.

The Upper Crust bakery: 2015 N. Dixie Highway, Lake Worth; 561-586-5456

Strawberry Pie at Testa’s

This strawberry-rich pie is the signature dessert at this historic Palm Beach restaurant.

Testa’s: 221 Royal Poinciana Way, Palm Beach; 561-832-0992

Peanut Butter Pie at the Living Room

This ice box pie is Living Room owner Lisa Mercado’s gift to peanut butter lovers. For the decadent finish, she tops it with chocolate ganache.

The Living Room: 1709 North Congress Ave., Boynton Beach; 561-742-4399

Key Lime Pie at Madisons

This rendition of South Florida’s favorite pie starts with a delicious crust that’s made of homemade graham crackers and crushed caramelized pecans. To that, all kinds of tangy key lime decadence is added.

Madisons New York Grill & Bar: 2006 NW Executive Center Circle, Boca Raton; 561-994-0808

Fresh fruit pie (okay, tart) at Sant Ambroeus

Technically, this is a tart that’s piled high with fresh fruit. But there’s an almond-based crust involved, a gorgeous one, and a cream filling. Today, it’s a pie. It’s one of the fresh confections you’ll find at the chic pastry bar at this Palm Beach hotspot.

Sant Ambroeus restaurant and bar: 340 Royal Poinciana Way, Palm Beach; 561-285-7990

Warm Chocolate Whoopie Pie at HMF Bar at The Breakers

In reality, this warm “pie” is made of chocolate cake that’s layered with Chantilly cream and topped with hot fudge. But blurred dessert lines do not bother us. A pie and a cake in one dish? We’ll take it.

HMF at The Breakers: 1 S. County Road, Palm Beach; 561-655-6611;

One of the best restaurants in America is right here in Palm Beach

It’s that time of year when ‘best of’ lists for 2017 are complied for all types of things, from best bites to favorite foods. And OpenTable just revealed one of the big ones: The 100 Best Restaurants in American for 2017. Craving warm noodles in winter? Slurp this way.
Craving warm noodles in winter? Slurp this way.

I'll make this brief: Sometimes, nothing but noodles will do. It's chilly, I'm hungry, and all I want is to slurp up carbs from a bowl. Maybe it's spaghetti with a simple marinara sauce. Maybe it's a soup like ramen, where the noodles come first and the broth (and everything else) after. Or perhaps it's something in between. That's the appeal of a...
Wines that resound in memory
Wines that resound in memory

For wine, “best” has little meaning. Ideally, every bottle opened will be the right one for that particular occasion, whether it is a $20 Oregon gamay or a $100 Champagne splurge. I’ve had a lot of best bottles this year, although not every one was memorable. Memorable wines strike notes beyond the glass. They stir emotions that forever...

A new Roman restaurant with a young chef celebrates the classics

The ochre walls at Santo Palato are hung with loud, futurist-style posters embodying the stylized cubism of 1920s Italian art. This design scheme is more than a trendy aesthetic choice. It prefigures the menu’s bold and decisive flavors and signals that the dishes are clearly rooted in their location: the San Giovanni neighborhood southeast of...

Top New York restaurants of 2017

Each December as I choose my favorite new restaurants of the year, I go slightly bonkers trying to find patterns. It must be a side effect of writing criticism on a weekly deadline, which forces me to focus on the task at hand. When I step back to look at the big picture in 12 months’ worth of reviews, my eyes have trouble adjusting to...
