Retailers push ‘Green Monday’ sales as online shopping grows

If you missed out on Black Friday deals, you’ll get a second chance at a bargain on Monday as retailers look move merchandise during one the biggest online shopping days of the year.

Many national chains are planning Black Friday-like sales around “Green Monday” — the retail industry’s newest shopping holiday. The annual push, held the second Monday in December, is a way for retailers to bridge the gap between Black Friday and the last-minute shopping rush right before Christmas.

The term “Green Monday” was coined in 2007 after retail trade groups noticed a rise in online sales on the second Monday in December. In 2014, Green Monday was the third busiest online shopping day of the year, with desktop sales totaling $1.6 billion, according to comScore, a digital measurement and analytics firm.

This year’s Green Monday is expected to be a record breaker, generating $2 billion in sales. For the retail industry, the shopping holiday would mark the first $2 billion day ever recorded in mid-December, according to Adobe Digital Insights, a research firm that tracks retail website sales.

The growth is being driven by a surge in online sales. Overall online sales are expected to hit record levels this holiday season.

Roughly 56 percent of shoppers plan to purchase items from online sites this year, up 6.8 percent from 2015, according to a survey released in October by the National Retail Federation.

The survey found brick-and-mortar department stores are expected to narrowly beat out online sites as the top place consumers plan to shop this season. But non-store retail sales, including those from online sites, mobile devices and other forms of e-commerce, are expected to grow by 7 percent to 10 percent this year, the federation said.

Cyber Monday — the Monday after the Thanksgiving weekend shopping rush — saw record sales this year.

A record $3.39 billion was spent online on Cyber Monday, Nov. 28, up 10.2 percent over 2015, according to Adobe.

Green Monday will be followed by “Free Shipping Day,” when many national retail offer free shipping on online orders and guarantee delivery by Christmas. This year, Free Shipping Day falls on Dec. 16.

With less than a week separating Green Monday and Free Shipping Day this year, deal experts say shoppers may be able to find promotions that cut prices and waive shipping charges on popular gift items.

“With Free Shipping Day being so close to Green Monday this year, the biggest and best deals will include free shipping, and/or discounted spending threshholds to get free shipping,” said Brent Shelton, a spokesman with the deal hunting website and the Black Friday website “The other big trends will include huge discounting on apparel, toys, personal electronics and smaller items that make for great stocking stuffers.”

Best Buy advertises on its website that its Green Monday sale will be one of its “biggest shopping events of the year,” with savings on 4K Ultra HD TVs, laptops, smartwatches, fitness trackers and tech toys.

“If you missed out on Black Friday 2016 or the Cyber Week sales earlier in the holiday shopping season, don’t worry: during Green Monday you can still find incredible prices on the hottest new technology on everyone’s wish list,” the electronics and appliance retailer said on its website. “…We’ve tailor-made this sale for shoppers who wait until after the buying frenzy around Thanksgiving to get their gifts.”

Walmart is also touting its Green Monday sale. Walmart plans to set aside a special page on its website for items included in its “Green Monday event.”

“Green Monday gives you another chance to save closer to the holiday season, which makes it ideal for last-minute shoppers who want to finish their shopping from the comfort of home,” Walmart said on its website.
