Palm Beach County’s first medical marijuana dispensary opened Tuesday, when Knox Medical began selling cannabis from a former bank branch at 1 S. Dixie Highway in Lake Worth.
What about the county’s second pot shop? Curaleaf, formerly known as Modern Health Concepts, says on its website that its location at 1125 N. Dixie Highway in Lake Worth is “coming soon.”
Curaleaf has yet to receive state approval for the location, a Florida Department of Health official said Wednesday. The company has requested a state inspection for January.
Curaleaf couldn’t be reached for comment, but landlord Scott Berman said he expects the dispensary to open by the end of the year, although he said he wasn’t aware of the company’s schedule for state approvals. Berman said the opening has been delayed by what he called an ambitious plan to build a Starbucks-like location.
“These guys are spending hundreds of thousands of dollars,” Berman said. “It’s not just open the doors and here we go.”
Berman said a medical marijuana doctor’s office also will open at his property. And he said he’s moving the 60-employee headquarters of his company, Florida Window & Door, into the property the week of Thanksgiving.
More than 50,000 Floridians have signed up for the state’s new medical marijuana program.
