Best of Our Blogs: Wells Fargo giving; Outlets to open Thanksgiving

A Wells Fargo exec presented a $100,000 check to a nonprofit last week — and she acknowledged that, at an otherwise feel-good event, the bank’s scandal swirled as “the elephant in the room.”

Nicole Burrell-Birt, area president for San Francisco-based Wells Fargo, ticked off the charitable donations given by the banking giant in Palm Beach County and suggested that was a better representation of the bank.

“That’s the Wells Fargo we know and love — the Wells Fargo that’s truly committed to our communities,” Burrell-Birt said.

Wells Fargo, of course, has been bruised by revelations it opened millions of phony accounts to meet aggressive cross-selling goals.

The bank on Oct. 13 presented a $100,000 check to Neighborhood Renaissance, the nonprofit developer that plans to build 36 new affordable rental apartments on Florida Mango Road in unincorporated Palm Beach County.

Black Friday 2016: Palm Beach Outlets to open on Thanksgiving

Palm Beach Outlets in West Palm Beach will open at 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day, and remain open until 1 a.m. on Black Friday, the shopping hub announced last week.

The announcement followed news earlier this month that two other retail chains, Office Depot and Hhgregg, would remain closed on Turkey Day this year. In addition, America’s biggest mall, the Mall of America in Minneapolis, also said it will remain closed on Thanksgiving, though its 520-plus tenant stores have the option to open on the holiday.

A number of other major retailers have not disclosed their plans for Thanksgiving, however.

But Palm Beach Outlets said the outdoor mall would open on Thanksgiving, then close for a brief period early Black Friday morning before reopening at 8 a.m.
